 Most people try to get luckier by trying harder in the same spot. The real edge comes from playing a different game entirely.
Luck isn't random. It is exposure multiplied by readiness. You can't control the first part completely, but you can engineer it so that when randomness hits, it hits in your favor. Here is the part most people never learn: 1. There are 4 kinds of luck, and only 1 is out of your hands This framework is from Naval Ravikant, but few people actually use it: Blind luck: Something happens to you. No control. Motion luck: You move a lot, collide with a lot of things, create chances. Salespeople live here. Awareness luck: You get good at a field and start spotting opportunities others miss because you understand the field. Uniqueness luck: You build something so specific to you that luck finds you. People come to you because only you do that thing. Most people wait for #1. Wealth and opportunity live in #3 and #4. How you shift: stop asking "how do I get more chances?" and start asking "what do I notice that others don't?" 2. Knowledge others ignore is almost always about people, not facts The secret knowledge isn't a fact. It's these: Weak ties create 80% of luck. Your close friends know the same opportunities you do. Your acquaintances live in completely different information worlds. One conversation a week with someone outside your usual circle does more for luck than a year of grinding. Keep those ties warm. Optionality beats goals. Don't make one big bet. Make 20 small bets where downside is capped and upside is uncapped. Taleb calls this being antifragile. Example: helping someone for free, publishing a small idea, learning a weird skill that overlaps with your main skill. Most will do nothing. One will return 100x. Be the only, not the best. Competition kills luck. If you are the best plumber in Nashville, you have 500 competitors. If you are the plumber who understands old historic homes and can explain it on video, you have 2. Peter Thiel's question: what do you believe that most people think is stupid or weird? That is where luck pools with no competition. Speed is a luck multiplier. People who are known for responding fast, deciding fast, and shipping fast get offered things first. Luck has a short shelf life. The person who replies in 10 minutes gets the deal that the person who replies tomorrow never hears about. 3. The old knowledge that actually works, but sounds like superstition These sound like folk wisdom because they were protecting information: Keep your big moves quiet until they are done. Not because of the evil eye. Because telling everyone gives you a premature dopamine hit and invites people to poke holes, slow you down, or compete with you. Talk about methods, not goals. Clean the environment to clear the signal. Every tradition from feng shui to Stoicism says the same thing: a cluttered, chaotic space makes you miss patterns. Luck requires pattern recognition. People with clean desks, clean calendars, and clean bodies notice things faster. Your nervous system has to feel safe to see opportunity. If you are chronically stressed, under-slept, or resentful, your brain literally filters out positive anomalies as distractions. It is in threat mode. Luck work is state work: sleep, walking without inputs, 10 minutes of stillness before you make decisions. That's when your reticular activating system starts flagging opportunities you were blind to before. Keep a luck ledger. Every night write down 3 things that went unexpectedly right, even tiny ones, and what you did that might have caused them. In 30 days you will see your personal luck pattern. For most people at 42, it's not hustle, it's being in the right room, or being generous when you didn't have to be. Then do more of that on purpose. 4. A simple 30-day system to run You don't need more motivation. You need more at-bats where the odds are tilted: • Monday: Reach out to one weak tie. No ask, just an interesting thing you thought they'd like. • Daily: Create one small piece of public proof of what you know. A post, a comment, a photo of work. Make it easy for luck to find you. • Weekly: Take one free asymmetric bet. Help someone above you, apply for something you are not qualified for, say yes to something you would normally say no to. • Always: Say no fast to anything with big downside and small upside. Luck dies when you have to recover from unforced errors. Real luck doesn't feel like winning the lottery. It feels like suddenly everything is connected, and you are the node where it connects. High level earth isn't more spells. In the old way, low level earth is using the earth, high level is becoming accountable to it. This is how the elders I learned from break it down: 1. Low level - Using earth Herbs, dirts, stones, roots for money, protection, stability. You take from the earth and use it. 2. Mid level - Listening to earth You start reading ground. You can't just take any dirt - you have to know what that place holds. A hill where children play is not the same as a hill where people were buried. You learn to ask, to leave something, to come back. That's why a lot of Black rootworkers won't even take yard dirt without talking to the house first. 3. Deep level - You belong to the earth This is what people mean by deep earth. In Kongo-derived cosmology - which is underneath a lot of Black Southern rootwork - the earth is not just ground. There's: • The world of the living on top • Kalunga - the watery line - in the middle • The world of the dead / ancestors underneath Deep earth magic lives at that bottom level. It's not about manifesting. It's about: • Bones and memory. Earth remembers everything that died in it. Deep work is sitting with that. Burial grounds, old battlefields, old family land - those places hold weight. High level workers don't go there to take. They go to tend, to clean, to listen. That's why you have to be introduced by someone from that land or that family in most traditions. You don't just walk in. • Mountains, caves, deep woods. High places and low places are both deep earth. A cave is the earth opening its mouth. That's why fasting, praying, or sitting vigil in a cave or on a mountain shows up in so many African traditions - from the Dogon to the Bakongo to the church mothers who prayed in the woods. • Time. Low earth is fast - do this for quick money. Deep earth is slow. You work the same piece of ground for years. You plant and watch it fail. You bury things and wait a season. The power isn't in the moment, it's in the relationship. In practice, the old folks say if you want to know if someone does deep earth work, don't look at what they can do. Look at: 1. Do they have land they've taken care of for a long time? 2. Do people bring their dead to them? 3. Do they know how to be still? Earth doesn't rush. That's why most real deep teachings are not written down and not sold. They are given by an elder after they've watched you handle the shallow stuff without abusing it. If you're writing about this for The Flaming Godhead, the most honest way to frame "high level" is not as stronger powers, but as heavier responsibility - you stop trying to make the earth do what you want, and you start asking what the earth needs from you. What part of deep earth are you trying to get at - ancestral, protection, or the mountain/cave lineage?  In the Black mystic / rootwork / Hoodoo tradition, Earth Power is not "nature worship" the way it's taught in Wiccan books. It's 3 things at once:
1. The body and the ground you stand on Earth = physical. Health, money, home, stability, protection, "staying grounded" when life gets heavy. If air is thoughts and fire is spirit, earth is what makes it real in this world. 2. Ancestors and memory Earth holds the dead. That's why dirt is power. In Kongo-derived tradition - which is the root of a lot of Black American rootwork in the South - the earth is where the ancestors live. Different dirts hold different memories: • Yard dirt / home dirt = protection of home, keeping family together • Bank dirt / business dirt = money drawing, business • Crossroads dirt = opening roads, decisions • Graveyard dirt = ancestral contact, heavy protection work It's not about the dirt itself, it's about the place and the spirit of that place. 3. Root - as in literal roots That's why it's called rootwork. The power is in roots, herbs, and stones that grow in that earth. Not because they are "magical," but because they have survived in that ground and carry that ground's character. High John root for mastery, angelica root for protection, etc. In the older Southern way: • Earth is the North, the color black/brown/green, winter, midnight • Work is done by burying, planting, laying things at thresholds, foot-track work - because what you put in the earth stays • You feed the earth with water, whiskey, or prayer to keep it active In the modern Black mystic community you see on Instagram / TikTok now, a lot of that got blended with crystal work and astrology, so "earth power" is often taught as: • Grounding when you're anxious or unrooted • Ancestral veneration - connecting through the earth your people walked on • Manifesting physical things - money, housing, health - because earth rules the physical plane • Protection - earth doesn't move, so it holds a boundary It's different family to family. A Gullah family in South Carolina, a Creole family in Louisiana, and a Detroit conjure family will all talk about earth power differently, but the core idea is the same: Spirit has to hit the ground to matter. Is that what you were trying to get at for your book? Are you thinking about writing about earth as grounding vs earth as ancestral power? In pop culture, earth psychokinesis gets shown as moving rocks with your mind, cracking the ground, making plants grow instantly. In the real world, under controlled testing, none of that has ever been demonstrated to work. Parapsychology has been trying to test psychokinesis for over 80 years and there's still no replicable evidence that people can move physical matter with thought alone. What people experience as real earth power - and what you can actually develop - are physical skills that look like that when someone is really good at it: 1. Growing / shaping living things This is the closest real thing to "plant manipulation." Not making a seed sprout in seconds, but people who can bring dead soil back to life, make things grow in bad conditions, graft trees, propagate from a cutting. In rootwork that's called having a green thumb and it's considered a literal earth gift. 2. Building / stone / clay work Masons, potters, sculptors, builders who can feel how earth materials want to sit. That ability to stack stone without mortar, throw clay centered every time, build a house that lasts 100 years - in a lot of old Black Southern traditions that is earth power. You affect the physical world through your hands, not your thoughts. 3. Finding and reading ground Dowsing is folk practice, but the real skill underneath is reading the land - where water is, where the ground is unstable, what plants tell you about soil. Hunters, farmers, well diggers do this daily. It's pattern recognition from years on the same land. 4. Grounding / nervous system regulation This one is measurable. Sitting with your back against a tree, feet in dirt, working with your hands in soil - heart rate drops, cortisol drops, you think clearer. That's not psychokinesis, it's your nervous system shifting from fight-or-flight to rest. That's why earth is prescribed in the mystic community for anxiety, anger, and feeling unrooted. If you mean it for your book The Flaming Godhead - the way most teachers frame it now is: earth power isn't about moving the earth outside you, it's about making you solid enough that you can move earth with your actual hands - work, money, home, health. The fictional version is moving a boulder without touching it. The real version is having the stamina, patience, and know-how to move the boulder anyway. Are you thinking about this as literal abilities for a character, or as a way to teach grounding as a real practice?  speak clear and simple. Work is always at play to fix the old mistakes.
